MacKenzie Bezos Pledges Half of Her $37 Billion Fortune to Charity

One of the richest women in the world is promising to give at least half of her wealth to charity! MacKenzie Bezos, who split from Amazon founder Jeff Bezos earlier this year after 25 years of marriage, is reportedly worth about $37 billion.

She has signed the Giving Pledge, which encourages affluent people to commit the majority of their wealth to philanthropic causes.

MacKenzie shared in a letter announcing her “Giving Pledge” vow, “We each come by the gifts we have to offer by an infinite series of influences and lucky breaks we can never fully understand. In addition to whatever assets life has nurtured in me, I have a disproportionate amount of money to share. My approach to philanthropy will continue to be thoughtful. It will take time and effort and care. But I won’t wait. And I will keep at it until the safe is empty.”

Her ex-husband Jeff Bezos, whose net worth is an estimated $114 billion, applauded MacKenzie’s generosity via Twitter, and wished her well.

Bill and Melinda Gates and Warren Buffett created the Giving Pledge in 2010, and according to the initiative’s website, over 200 “of the world’s wealthiest individuals, couples, and families” have been included for 23 countries.

Mackenzie is one of 19 new signers of the pledge, as of this past Tuesday. Richard Branson, George Lucas, Michael R. Bloomberg, and Robert F. Smith — who recently made headlines for paying off Morehouse College grads’ loans — are among them.

Real fam, what do you think of MacKenzie’s charitable move?
