Tory Lanez Alleges Colorism by Director on Music Video Shoot

Rapper Tory Lanez is claiming he witnessed an action while shooting a music video that didn’t sit well with him. Tory took to Instagram to share a clip, as well as a message that alleges a director replaced a darker-skinned woman with a lighter-skinned one. His Instagram post came with an impassioned plea for directors to not “de-value our black women.”

In the video posted Sunday, the Canadian rapper showed a behind-the-scenes moment from Nafe Smallz’s “Good Love” shoot, in which a woman with a lighter complexion is seemingly substituted for the woman dancing beside him while filming. You can then see Tory calling a timeout to halt the switch and bring back the other woman.

Tory wrote, “This is an On -Going problem in our community of entertainment that needs to stop . As a black man , Sometimes I’m going to joke about the black community just like we all do . BUT WHAT IM NOT GOING TO DO IS ALLOW ANY OF THESE DIRECTORS TO DE-VALUE OUR BLACK WOMEN ... countless times I’ve seen directors swap out our women of color for women of lighter complexion, or women with straighter hair ETC . ... IT IS OUR RESPONSIBILITY AS ARTIST TO STAND UP AND NOT LET THIS HAPPEN .. it’s BEEN time to embrace our woman of color #BlackIsBeautiful.”

Despite Tory’s words, some who were present at the shoot dismissed his claims. Sultry Shen, the darker-skinned model said via her Instagram Story, “Where is the scene then if @torylanez wanted me so bad?!!! #fakenews.”

Tory has since addressed doubters via an Instagram Story message on Monday, denying that his claims were a publicity stunt. A portion of his Story read, “IF this was a publicity stunt, why would I be doing it for someone else's music video? Why wouldn’t I have paid the females involved? And if I did pick both girls then how come there’s only shots of me with the ebony model and not with the other one ? Mind y’all this video shoot happened 3 months ago and a behind the scenes camera man DM’d it to me the other day.. All parties that were involved know exactly what happened in the 30 minutes that I was at the shoot.”
