Yes, National Selfie Day is a real thing, and it just happens to fall on June 21. You don’t have to run to your phone to flip the camera and snap a pic of yourself if that’s not your thing (if it is, go for it!), but you can celebrate the social media holiday by checking out some memorable selfies from over the years.
The relatively new term selfie is a legitimate one — it was actually named as “word of the year” by Oxford Dictionaries in 2013 and is officially defined as “a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website.”
Selfies are a part of everyday life these days, so let’s look at some legendary ones that have made their digital mark.
Selena Gomez, who's a reigning queen of Instagram followers — she’s just behind Ariana Grande and Christiano Ronaldo — snapped this sultry shot that earned over 12 million likes.
Pictures aren’t allowed inside the Met Gala, but that didn’t stop popular Instagrammer Kylie Jenner from taking one in 2017.
Who could forget Ellen’s viral Oscars selfie, featuring stars from Meryl Streep to Jennifer Laurence to Lupita Nyong’o?
