Bebe Rexha Calls Out Sexism and Ageism in Music Industry

Bebe Rexha has had a breakout few years, dominating the pop charts with songs like “I’m a Mess” and “In the Name of Love.” The singer/songwriter, who has written tracks for Iggy Azalea, Selena Gomez, and Tinashe, was nominated for two Grammys this past year, and is up for three MTV VMAs. Despite her success, the artist is taking the time to speak out about ageism in the music industry, sharing her story of an executive who questioned her age and how her actions affect her “brand.”

Bebe posted a black and white shot of herself on Instagram Monday with a lengthy caption about the criticism she has faced regarding the way she portrays herself on social media. The 29-year-old recounted, “I recently had a MALE music executive tell me that I was getting too old and that my brand was ‘confusing.’ Because... I’m a songwriter and I post sexy pics on my Instagram and that’s not what female songwriters are supposed to do, especially for my age.”

But Bebe isn’t here for the judgement, and she’s unapologetically going to be her own person. She went on, “I’m 29. I’m fed up with being put in a box. I make my own rules. I’m tired of women getting labeled as ‘hags’ when they get old and guys get labeled as sexy with age. Anyways, I’m turning 30 on August 30 and you know what, I’m not running away from it.”

Plus, she has no intention of conforming to a certain style because of her age. Bebe finished the post with this: “I’m not gonna lie about my age or sing songs that I feel will sell better because they sound “younger.” I’m gonna celebrate my age because you know what, I’m wiser, I’m stronger and TRUST ME I’m a much better lover than I was 10 years ago.”

Rita Ora added, “My sexy songwriting 👑 You are beautiful, getting sexier with age and your talent SINGS for itself. Keep making those rules 💞” The Chainsmokers shared heart eye emojis in response to the post, while Neyo commented, “Amen mama.”
