Jennifer Lopez doesn’t let age get in her way, and neither does Tamera! In fact, Tam is embracing this time in her life because it has allowed her to flourish. J.Lo turned 50 this year and has said of the milestone, “You’re getting better and better as you go, so long as you are open to the experience of growing and evolving.” So, when the ladies of “The Real” chatted about improving with age, Tamera revealed why her 40s have been so significant.
Tamera explained, “I honestly feel like I’m just beginning at 40. I’m 41, and what’s interesting is I achieved my dream at a very young age. I achieved it at 14 years old, and at one point I was scared. I had a lot of anxiety because I was like, ‘Holy crap, Well, now what? What am I gonna do?"
She continued, “[J.Lo] knew what she was saying when she said you have to be open to evolving with your experiences in your life and not being afraid of change, because never, ever in my life did I ever think I was going to be a talk show host or a producer. Now, a winery owner. And maybe, hell, a winemaker one day. So, you are the one who defines your journey, whether you’re 40, 50, 60, 70… You know, it’s up to you.”
It’s never too late to start down a new path, an idea Adrienne loves. Jeannie added that your mindset mellows out when you turn 40.
“When I was younger, I was always like, ‘Okay, so, where am I going to make my money? Where am going to live? Who am I going to date and how do I make myself datable?’” Jeannie said. “You’re always rushing to find out what these things are.”
She continued, “What you notice at 40 is when you just chill and you just take in how dope you are, how amazing you’ve survived all your life experiences, and then you hear yourself, and your intuition is over there like, ‘Yo, ask me and I’ll tell you exactly what you should be doing and what you could be doing.’ And your intuition has always been talking, but you never stopped to listen.”
As Loni notes, some women in their 50s have already raised their kids, so they’re ready to embark on a new chapter. Because she feels Hollywood often devalues older women, Loni shouted out women “doing the damn thing” like Viola Davis, Halle Berry and Angela Bassett.
What are your thoughts on getting older? Do you feel it’s helped you evolve in unexpected ways?
