‘The Real’ Sounds-Off on Shakira Not Wanting Her Boyfriend to See Her as a ‘Wife’

Shakira’s hips don’t lie, and neither does she!

In an interview with “60 Minutes,” the “Whenever, Wherever” singer revealed she does not want to get married to longtime boyfriend Gerard Piqué because she does not want him to see her as a “wife.”

“To tell you the truth, marriage scares the s--- out of me. I don’t want him to see me as ‘the wife.’ I’d rather him see me as his girlfriend,” the musician revealed.

“It’s like a little forbidden fruit, you know?” she added. “I wanna keep him on his toes. I want him to think that anything’s possible, depending on behavior.”

On Thursday’s episode of “The Real,” hosts Jeannie Mai, Loni Love, Adrienne Houghton, Tamera Mowry-Housley and Amanda Seales reacted to the Colombian star’s controversial comments.

Houghton discussed how the word “wife” could carry a negative connotation, especially when it relates to a married couple’s sex life.

“There seems to be a fear attached to the title of being a wife. And I honestly get that, because… there is a stigma, and a major stereotype about marriage,” she exclaimed. “There’s a huge stigma about wives not being fun, wives not being lovers, them being annoying, and nagging, and wack. I’ve heard plenty of guys say, when other guys are getting married, ‘Congratulations on your marriage. You’re never having sex again.’”

While Mai notes “marriage is just the beginning” and not the end goal of a relationship, she understands Shakira’s point on why people do not want to commit.

“Because there is a pursuing that happens in dating that continues, and generally, people don’t think that you still need to pursue in marriage because you’ve gotten the goal,’ she said, later adding, “Dating should never stop in marriage.”

Regardless, Love does not want a woman’s relationship status to define them as a person.

“I just don’t like the fact when people try to weaponize marriage against women, and say, ‘If you’re not married, you’re not a woman,’ the comic noted. “What [Shakira] is showing is, ‘I’m fine, we’re fine, we’re together.’”

Overall, Mowry-Housley put it best when she declared, “Marriage is what you make it.”

“Even when you’re married, you could still be the girlfriend, you could still be the lover,” she added.

Shakira and Gerard share two boys: Sasha, 4, and Milan, 6.
