David Cruz, who was Jennifer Lopez’s high school sweetheart, has passed away at the age of 51.
Per the New York City Medical Examiner’s Office, Cruz died on Saturday at Mount Sinai West Hospital in Manhattan. According to TMZ, he succumbed to heart disease.
Cruz and Lopez reportedly dated for about 10 years, beginning when she was 15. The two ultimately broke up in the mid-’90s.
Cruz’s partner of 18 years, Isa, released an emotional statement to TMZ, calling him a “devoted father” who helped raise her son — now a Marine.
“He was kind and loving. He never held on to anything and was always very open. He was a devoted father, he helped raise his step-son who is now in the Marines. He loved the Yankees and Knicks. He loved going to the theatre with me,” Isa exclaimed. “My favorite moment was family date night, because it wasn’t just special for me but for the kids as well. He always made sure to end things with an ‘I love you.’”
Lopez later married Cuban waiter Ojani Noa, choreographer Cris Judd, and fellow singer Marc Anthony, with whom she shares 12-year-old twins, daughter Emme and son Maximilian.
The “Hustlers” actress is currently engaged to Alex Rodriguez.
