The battle of the R&B legends!
On Monday, Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds and Teddy Riley — two of the most prolific singer/songwriter/producers of their time — finally faced off in a highly buzzed Instagram Live matchup after their first April 18 meet was derailed by technical difficulties.
At the event, each musician played a song from their extensive discography, which they either performed or produced.

Babyface even brought out an acoustic guitar for a live rendition of his 1993 Grammy-winning hit “When Can I See You.”
Despite the battle’s seemingly competitive nature, both Babyface and Riley praised each other’s talents.
“You brought New Jack Swing to us all... I’m honored to be in here with you, man,” Babyface told his rival, referencing the genre that Riley popularized from the mid-1980s to the early 1990s.
“You inspired me,” Riley exclaimed to Babyface.
At the end, many fans refused to pick a winner, as the purpose of the event was to bring people together to celebrate music during these challenging times.
“There’s no reason to keep score. It’s impossible. Just two-step (or running man) and enjoy. These Black men gave us so much,” said April Reign, the activist who created #OscarsSoWhite.
“We all won tonight,” wrote an excited Bruno Mars. “Witnessing @KennyEdmonds and @TeddyRiley1 go back and forth with pure greatness.”
Earlier this month, Babyface announced he accepted fellow producers Swizz Beatz and Timbaland’s invitation to battle with Riley, in what he called “a Celebration of Black Music Excellence.”
In the same post, the 61-year-old announced he and his family tested for, and then recovered from, the coronavirus.
“I feel so blessed to be able to celebrate another birthday. I tested positive for the Covid19 virus, as did my family. It’s an incredibly scary thing to go through my friends,” Babyface wrote on his page. “I’m happy to report we have now tested negative and are on our way back to full health.”
