Jace Prescott, the older brother of Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, has passed away at age 31.
On Thursday, the Texas NFL team announced the tragic news in a statement.
“It is with great sadness and support that we share the news of the passing of Jace Prescott today,” it read. “The loss of Tad and Dak’s brother is devastating. At this incredibly difficult time, the Prescott family asks only for prayers and respect for their privacy.”
Jace’s cause of death has yet to be revealed.
Team owner Jerry Jones also offered his condolences, and asked fans to send their well wishes to Dak during this challenging time.
“We are so saddened that Dak has lost his brother,” Jones said. “We want him [sic] to help him get through this time. Whatever we can do to help him get through this tough time. When you’re young, and Dak is young, death is really hard to understand to think about or live with.”
Jace’s death is particularly tragic for the Prescott family, who lost mother Peggy to colon cancer in 2013.
Last year, Dak and Jace, along with their brother Tad, starred in a commercial for Campbell’s Chunky Soup.
During an interview at the shoot, Dak noted how he has leaned on his brothers after his mom’s passing.
“My brothers have always been champions,” he said. “Them along with my mom... So now, not having my mom and just having them two, they mean even more.”
“Family is everything,” Dak added. “It’s what keeps me grounded. When everything else is changing around me, I know that’s one thing that’s always consistent and certain. I’m thankful for them.”
Jace was also an athlete who played offensive line for Northwestern State in Louisiana from 2008 to 2010.
May he rest in peace.
