Katy Perry’s ‘American Idol’ Hand Sanitizer Costume Divides Social Media!

Katy Perry dressed as a giant bottle of hand sanitizer on “American Idol,” and social media doesn’t know how to feel about it!

Hours before the talent competition show premiered its first-ever remote episode on Sunday, the pregnant “Teenage Dream” singer unveiled her wacky outfit, which closely resembled a container of Purell — pump and all!

“Oh, hey! Katy Perry here. Reminding you to stay safe, wash your hands, and tune into an all-new, like-never-before episode of ‘American Idol’ tonight,” she said in an Instagram video.

While critiquing the top 20 contestants with fellow judges Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan, who also videoed in from their respective homes, the songstress (still wearing the over-the-top costume) told host Ryan Seacrest at the start of the show, “I just want to make sure that ‘American Idol’ is staying as safe as possible.”

However, following the episode’s broadcast, social media users were divided on Perry’s eccentric ensemble.

Some thought it was “hilarious,” as Perry is known for wearing off-the-wall fashion both onstage and off.

“OH MY GOD you are my favorite human I can’t lmao,” one wrote on Instagram.

“You are hilarious,” another added on Twitter.

Others thought the costume was “distracting,” and took attention away from the hardworking contestants and their performances.

“Katy… please take that off… it is so distracting… please,” said a Twitter user.

"'Idol' should be about the contestants, not the judges. Katy's costume needs to go. Funny for the first 10 seconds," said another.

Many thought the outfit was “disrespectful” to both the show and to medical employees, who are working tirelessly to help those affected by the coronavirus.

“Katy Perry in a hand sanitizer costume was absolute buffoonery, and completely disrespectful to the contestants singing for their professional lives. What producer thought this was appropriate? Utterly ridiculous," one said.

“I thought this was extremely disrespectful to the singers, her co-workers, and especially health care workers. I appreciate how ‘Idol’ and [its] singers are adjusting [to working remotely]. Why does Katy need to make it about herself?” another added.

During the episode, Perry — who is expecting her first child with fiancé Orlando Bloom — gave an update on her pregnancy.

“I’m doing well. Thank you,” Perry told Seacrest. “When I look back at this time, it will be a time I never forget. My first pregnancy, in a pandemic, having cravings that I can’t necessarily fill if I want to.”

Earlier this month on Instagram, Perry announced she is expecting a baby girl.
