TikTok Users Are Posting Secret Codes to Address Mental Health Issues

“I had pasta tonight” might not mean what you think it means.

Recently, social media users have been noticing that several videos on TikTok contain phrases about “pasta.”

“saw a tiktok about a girl saying her mom just made her favorite pasta.... not knowing what it’s about, i went to the comment section & its everyone giving her reasons to stay. one comment said, ‘have you heard your child’s laugh yet?’” wrote one Twitter user.

Upon further investigation, it appears these TikTokers are using secret codes to tell their followers that they may be struggling with mental health issues and/or contemplating suicide.

Another secret code that has circulated around the video-sharing service is, “I finished my shampoo and conditioner at the same time.”

Last week, a Reddit user said they believe these phrases come from a Wattpad post titled, “Don’t Kill Yourself Today,” in which the author urges the reader to not give in to their suicidal thoughts.

“So don’t kill yourself until you finish your shampoo and conditioner at the same time… Don’t kill yourself until you tell someone your best pasta recipe,” the post read.

When one TikTok user posted a video with the caption, “Told my mom about my favorite pasta recipe and she made it for dinner tonight,” she received an overwhelming amount of positive messages in the comments section.

“You’re so loved,” one person wrote.

“You haven’t come this far to only come this far,” another posted.

“This comment section is my new therapy. Thank you,” another added.

Per an October 2019 report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the suicide rate among people aged 10 to 24 increased 56 percent between 2007 and 2017.
