Authorities have doubts as to whether they will ever locate the body of Naya Rivera, who went missing Wednesday and was presumed dead on Thursday following a Lake Piru boat trip with her 4-year-old son Josey.
At a press conference on Thursday, Ventura County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Kevin Donoghue was asked by reporters if Rivera’s body will be recovered if she did, in fact, drown.
“It depends,” Donoghue answered. “If the body is entangled in something beneath the water, it may never come back up. We don’t know.”
Donoghue later explained that the search for Rivera is “complicated” because the visibility of the Ventura, California, lake "is not very good — it's terrible."
"There's a lot of trees and plants and such that are under the water that can cause entanglement. Makes it unsafe for divers and a complicated search," Donoghue said.
Prior to the press conference, police told People that they are “confident” Rivera is still in the water.
Police say that on Wednesday, Josey was found sleeping alone on a rented boat shortly before 5 p.m. While the boy was wearing his life jacket, an adult-sized life jacket, believed to have been provided to Rivera, was still on the boat.
Captain Eric Buschow confirmed to Us Weekly on Thursday that Josey told officials he and his mom went swimming in the lake, but that she did not come back up.
Per photographs published by The Daily Mail, Josey was seen on Thursday with his father Ryan Dorsey, who is Rivera’s ex-husband.
The father and son were spotted leaving the Valencia, California, home of Rivera’s sister, Nickayla Rivera.
The outlet reports that earlier that day, Dorsey was too distraught to answer any questions, explaining that he had to care of his young son.
An unnamed housemate of Dorsey's told The Daily Mail that the actor had “no idea” that Rivera was taking their son to Lake Piru on Wednesday.
However, once Dorsey learned about the devastating news, the housemate says Ryan “headed up there as soon as their son was found to look after him. He was gone by the time I got home Wednesday.”
Rivera and Dorsey married in July 2014 and finalized their divorce in June 2018.
