It’s official! Tyra Banks is the new host of “Dancing With the Stars”!
On Tuesday, ABC announced that the supermodel will host the dance competition show in its 29th season and will also serve as executive producer alongside showrunner Andrew Llinares. The catwalk legend will be the program’s first solo Black female host.
“In collaboration with the show’s executive producer/showrunner, Andrew Llinares, Banks will bring her energy and inspiration to the creative refresh the team is planning while honoring the show America loves,” the network said in a statement.
“I’ve been a fan of ‘DWTS’ since its beginning,” Banks added in her own statement. “The fun mixed with raw emotion, seeing celebrities push past their comfort zones, the sizzling dance performances... it’s always transported me to my days of turning it up 10 notches on the catwalk.”
In an interview with “Good Morning America” on Wednesday, the creator of “America’s Next Top Model” hinted that the show based on the U.K. series “Strictly Come Dancing” will undergo some major changes.
“OK, let’s just keep this real: It is going to be so next level,” she said on-air. “We’re doing all this crazy stuff, taking it into the next level, but still keeping the stuff that we know America loves. But you need to get ready, because it’s going to be different.”
Earlier this week, it was announced that longtime presenter Tom Bergeron, who has been with “DWTS” for the past 15 years, and Erin Andrews, who was a contestant in 2010 and became a co-host in 2014, will be leaving the show.
“Just informed @DancingABC will be continuing without me,” Bergeron tweeted Monday. “It’s been an incredible 15 year run and the most unexpected gift of my career. I’m grateful for that and for the lifelong friendships made. That said, now what am I supposed to do with all of these glitter masks?”
Andrews wrote Tuesday on Instagram, “Thank you ABC and the entire ‘Dancing With the Stars’ family for 6 memorable seasons. Those years wouldn’t have been as special without my loving host Tom Bergeron, the talented dancers and the witty judges. I will always cherish my days on that set, even if I wasn’t the best at walking in heels.”
Per The Daily Mail, filming for Season 29 is expected to begin this fall. However, no premiere date has been announced.
