Surprise! J. Cole is the father to two sons.
In an essay for The Audacity posted Monday, the “Crooked Smile” rapper opens up parenthood.
“Four years have passed [since the release of his 2016 album, "4 Your Eyez Only"]. In that time I’ve been blessed with two sons, learned the delicate art of balance between parenthood and career, had the pleasure of working with a ton of talented artists as a featured rapper, spent 10 magical days recording a Dreamville album in Atlanta, and put a lot of time and energy into sharpening my sword and growing as an artist,” the 35-year-old artist wrote, referencing Dreamville Records, a label he co-founded with manager Ibrahim “Ib” Hamad.
The MC, born Jermaine Lamarr Cole, tied the knot with wife Melissa Heholt in 2015.
In 2018, Cole confirmed to DJ Angie Martinez that he started a family, and that his purpose in life was “to be a father and husband.”
“When I’m home and I come home, outside of, like, playing with my son, if I go three days without doing music, making a beat, writing a song… I start to feel, like, miserable,” he said during the interview.
Tuesday on Instagram, Cole announced he is releasing two new singles -— “The Climb Back” and “Lion King on Ice” — from his upcoming album “The Fall Off” on Wednesday at 10 p.m. ET.
However, he said his new LP does not have a release date, as it is still a work in progress.
“No date for the album yet, taking my time, still finishing,” he added.
