Our girl Zendaya made history with her first Emmy win.
On Sunday at the 2020 Emmy Awards, the 24-year-old became the youngest person to win Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her role in HBO’s “Euphoria” — beating out Jennifer Aniston (“The Morning Show”), Laura Linney (“Ozark”), Olivia Colman (“The Crown”), Sandra Oh (“Killing Eve”), and Jodie Comer (“Killing Eve”).
“I’m really, really nervous. OK. Oh, gosh,” she began her emotional acceptance speech. “I just want to say thank you to the TV Academy, to all the other incredible women in this category, I admire you all so much. This is pretty crazy — I don’t really cry, whew!”
“To the incredible cast and crew of ‘Euphoria,’ I’m so lucky to go to work with you every day and I’m inspired by everything you do,” she added. “And to [creator] Sam Levinson, I appreciate you so much and you’re my family. I’m so grateful for [her character] Rue, I’m so grateful that you trusted me with your story, and I hope I can continue to do you proud.”
Zendaya concluded her speech saying she has hope for the future generation.
“I know that this feels like a really weird time to be celebrating, but I just want to say that there is hope in the young people out there,” she said. “I know that our TV show doesn’t always feel like a great example of that, but there is hope in the young people, and I just want to say to all my peers out there doing the work in the streets: I see you, I admire you, I thank you.”
Following her groundbreaking win, social media users couldn’t contain their excitement.
“I love her. She is an amazing multi-talented woman & her transition from child actor to adult is how it [should] go. The way she expresses herself is awe inspiring. Congratulations to her for her well deserved win,” said one Twitter user.
“Congrats! I knew this was yours from the first episode, you’re a FORCE!” wrote a social media commenter.
“ZENDAYA WON AN EMMY LETS GOOOO,” said another.
Hours after taking home the prize, Zendaya continued to express her gratitude on Instagram Story.
“Still on cloud nine,” she wrote over a picture of her ecstatic face. “So grateful, still speechless, to all my friends and family who have texted/tweeted/called etc. I promise I will get back to you tomorrow when I’ve wrapped my head around this amazing night, until then… gonna go to sleep and make sure this isn’t a dream.”
On Monday, she posted a photo of herself holding up her trophy in a custom Armani Privé gown with Bulgari jewelry.
