John Legend honors wife Chrissy Teigen after the couple suffered the loss of their third child, a son named Jack.
Wednesday night at the Billboard Music Awards, the singer dedicated his performance of “Never Break” to Teigen, who tragically announced her miscarriage late last month.
“This is for Chrissy,” Legend said at the beginning of his set.
The song — off of Legend’s seventh studio album “Bigger Love” — describes a relationship that will “never break” amid life’s challenges.
“I’m not worried about us, and I’ve never been,” Legend sang. “We know how the story ends.”
Prior to her miscarriage, Teigen had been hospitalized for excessive bleeding from her placenta.
“We are shocked and in the kind of deep pain you only hear about, the kind of pain we’ve never felt before. We were never able to stop the bleeding and give our baby the fluids he needed, despite bags and bags of blood transfusions. It just wasn’t enough,” she wrote on Instagram, announcing the devastating news.
Though she says she and John “never decide on our babies’ names until the last possible moment,” the two “had started to call this little guy” Jack while in utero.
“So he will always be Jack to us. Jack worked so hard to be a part of our little family, and he will be, forever.”
Teigen’s mom Vilailuck also shared heartbreaking video and photos of her embracing her late grandson.
“My heart aches love you so much baby Jack,” Vilailuck wrote.
Legend and Teigen — who tied the knot in September 2013 — share son Miles, 2, and daughter Luna, 4.
