Khloé Kardashian Defends Sister Kim’s ‘Tone Deaf’ 40th Birthday Party

Khloé Kardashian defends sister Kim Kardashian’s lavish 40th birthday party, which many have slammed as “tone deaf.”

During an appearance on “Ellen” airing Thursday, Khloé — who contracted COVID-19 earlier this year — addressed the controversy, saying she “did hear that people were upset that we all went out of town.”

Earlier this week on Instagram, Kim revealed that she surprised family and close friends with a trip to a private island for her 40th birthday. Prior to the vacation, all attendees underwent multiple health screenings and quarantined for two weeks.

40 and feeling so humbled and blessed. There is not a single day that I take for granted, especially during these times when we are all reminded of the things that truly matter. For my birthday this year, I couldn’t think of a better way to spend it than with some of the people who have helped shaped me into the woman I am today. Before COVID, I don’t think any of us truly appreciated what a simple luxury it was to be able to travel and be together with family and friends in a safe environment. After 2 weeks of multiple health screens and asking everyone to quarantine, I surprised my closest inner circle with a trip to a private island where we could pretend things were normal just for a brief moment in time. We danced, rode bikes, swam near whales, kayaked, watched a movie on the beach and so much more. I realize that for most people, this is something that is so far out of reach right now, so in moments like these, I am humbly reminded of how privileged my life is. #thisis40

Despite the precautions, many social media users slammed the luxe getaway, as they felt it was insensitive to those who have suffered — both physically and financially — from the coronavirus pandemic.

“Brilliant observation! This kind of vacation is out of reach for most people COVID-19 or no COVID-19,” said one IG user.

“How can anyone be so tone deaf?” wrote another IG commenter.

Musician Peter Frampton also wrote on Twitter, “Are you that insensitive you don’t realize this is not what the majority of people during the worst Covid spike yet want to hear? People are going to food banks not private islands.”

However, Khloé defended the vacation, telling Ellen DeGeneres, “But this year is a frustrating year. I get it. I think there’s so many frustrations going on for everybody. But also it’s her 40th. This is something that she wanted to do for us. It was such a nice thing.”

The “Revenge Body” host also reiterated the trip’s safety measures and said that the staff on the island — reported by Page Six to be Tetiaroa Atoll in Tahiti — were grateful for visitors.

“Being there with all the precautions that we took and being there and how grateful everyone was for the tourism aspect of it,” she said.

“So many people said that we were their first party of guests that they’ve had in months, and what it’s done for them to be able to pay their bills or to be able to do stuff for their family, just hearing those messages when we were there, we felt really good and we felt so safe.”

“We did it in the safest way I could imagine someone doing it,” she added.

On Wednesday, Page Six reported that Kim spent a whopping $1 million on the trip, which included travel on an 88-seat Boeing 777 and rooms at a luxurious resort.

“Once on the island they had lavish dinner after dinner, spa treatments and hikes through the nature sanctuary,” an insider told the outlet. “There was no expense spared. Everyone was banned from posting on social media by Kim to ensure her privacy.”
