Dustin Diamond, known for playing Samuel “Screech” Powers on the hit NBC sitcom “Saved by the Bell,” has passed away at 44 from stage 4 lung cancer.
In a statement provided to multiple outlets, the actor passed away Monday after he was diagnosed just three weeks ago.
“We are saddened to confirm of Dustin Diamond’s passing on Monday, February 1st, 2021 due to carcinoma. He was diagnosed with this brutal, relentless form of malignant cancer only three weeks ago,” his representative said. “In that time, it managed to spread rapidly throughout his system; the only mercy it exhibited was its sharp and swift execution. Dustin did not suffer. He did not have to lie submerged in pain. For that, we are grateful.”
Diamond’s spokesperson also remembers the screen star as “a character in and of himself: an unpredictable spitfire who always left us shocked, but never left us bored.”
“We are thankful he trusted us enough to share his genuine, authentic self with our team. We wish you knew him in the way that we did. We please ask that you give room for privacy to our team and Mr. Diamond’s family during this tragic time, as we grieve and remember the memories spent together. This loss is as much stinging as it is sudden.”
TMZ added on Monday that Diamond’s girlfriend was by his side when he passed.
Earlier this month, TMZ reported that Diamond discovered a lump in his throat, which led to the diagnosis.
At the time, the representative said Diamond underwent his first round of chemotherapy and was experiencing pain from having shingles.
Days before this report, TMZ said Diamond was hospitalized in Florida after feeling pain all over his body and a general sense of unease. The outlet adds that Diamond’s family has a history of cancer and that his mother died from breast cancer.
In addition to appearing in the original “Saved by the Bell,” Diamond appeared in spin-offs including “Saved by the Bell: Hawaiian Style,” “Saved by the Bell: The College Years,” “Saved by the Bell: Wedding in Las Vegas,” and “Saved by the Bell: The New Class.”
Our condolences go out to his family and loved ones for their loss.
