Congratulations are in order for Kristen Welker and her husband John Hughes!
On Friday’s broadcast of “Today,” the NBC News chief White House correspondent announced that she and her spouse are expecting their first child via surrogate. Their baby girl is due in June.
“After years and years of trying, I’m having a baby girl with John and we are so excited,” the “Weekend Today” co-host announced. “It’s with the help of a surrogate.”
The couple announced their baby news during Infertility Awareness Week in hopes that their story will give other prospective parents hope.
After they tied the knot March 2017, Welker says the two “immediately started to try to have a baby.”
Though it didn’t work out, the husband and wife sought help from a doctor who recommended in vitro fertilization, commonly referred to as IVF.
“First round of IVF, it went really well and I thought, ‘I’m going to be pregnant within the next few months, no problem.’”
Sadly, Welker received the devastating news that the lining of her uterus was too thin to carry a child.
“And I thought, ‘OK, well, let’s fix it. There has to be something that we can do to fix this,’” she said.
In between her work as a journalist, Welker went to numerous doctor appointments and underwent a variety of tests.
“I was going into the doctor in between live shots at work and just feeling like… a failure, frankly,” Welker recalled.
After two years of efforts, Welker came to the realization that she would not be able to carry a child. “And it was probably the lowest moment and realization that I’ve ever had.”
However, Welker and Hughes refused to give up and decided to have a baby through surrogacy.
“Being matched with a surrogate is one of the most extraordinary experiences I have ever had,” Welker said.
Though the first transfer did not work, the surrogate became pregnant when Welker moderated the final 2020 presidential debate.
“I can’t wait to tell my daughter that,” Welker said. “I credit her with the fact that I remained calm that night."
Overall, Welker is proud of her pregnancy journey, and cannot wait to meet her little girl.
“All of the tears and the sadness and the setbacks were worth it because she’s worth it. And we cannot wait for that day when we can actually meet her and hug her and hold her,” she said, revealing that she and Hughes would like to possibly have more children.
