Gayle King Announces Daughter’s Pregnancy!

Gayle King has exciting news to share!

While appearing on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” Wednesday, the “CBS This Morning” co-anchor revealed that her daughter Kirby Bumpus — who married Virgil Miller in January — is pregnant!

"So you're bugging your daughter about having grandkids already, I heard?" DeGeneres quipped.

"Yes, Ellen. I am," King responded with a laugh. "I've been keeping a list of baby names.”

That’s when King dished, “Ellen, I have to tell you this: Right before I came on the air, I said, 'Kirby, you know, I'm doing ‘Ellen’ today. Can I tell Ellen?' Ellen — she's pregnant. She is pregnant."

Aside from telling a few close friends, Kirby has kept her baby news under wraps… until now!

"We haven't told anybody because I've been held to secrecy. She told all of her friends this past weekend, so she said I could tell you," King continued, later adding that her grandbaby is due in September.

"And, Ellen, I'm going to be a grandmother and I can't wait!... Right before we went on the air, I said, 'Kirby, if Ellen doesn't ask me anything about grandchildren I'm not gonna mention it. But if she does ask me, I don't wanna stand there and say I don't know. I don't want to do that.’”

Though the journalist knows the sex of the little tot, she’s keeping that news hush-hush. However, she did disclose that she initially hoped for a boy.

"Listen, I'm the oldest of four girls. My whole life I wanted a big brother. My whole life. I just saw that people with big brothers were lucky," King said. "So I always like a firstborn to be a boy, then the second one is a girl. Then you have a big brother that takes care of you. That's just my own little fantasy."

After King explained that she doesn't want to be called "Grandma," she asked DeGeneres for "cool" grandparent nicknames.

"How about 'Miss Lady'?" Ellen suggested before King shot it down.

"That's your assignment,” King said, “to come up with a cool grandmother name for Gayle."

In February, O Magazine broke the news that Kirby tied the knot the previous month at godmother Oprah Winfrey’s Montecito, California, home.

However, because of the coronavirus pandemic, Gayle and Kirby were forced to plan the nuptials over Zoom. Gayle was also unable to help or hug her daughter before Kirby walked down the aisle.

Despite these obstacles, Kirby and Virgil exchanged vows, and the family celebrated afterward with “socially distant hors d’oeuvres and cake, and socially distant dancing.”

“Kirby really is so happy, and nothing beats when your children are happy,” Gayle told the magazine.

Congratulations to Kirby, Virgil, and the entire King family on their baby news!
