Tyler Perry Is Bringing Back Madea for New Netflix Film!

Tyler Perry isn’t saying goodbye to Madea after all!
This week, the Hollywood Reporter announced that the actor/writer/producer/director will reprise his role of Madea — who is based on Perry’s mother and aunt — in a new movie for Netflix titled “A Madea Homecoming.”
The 12th installment of the film franchise will be shot at Perry’s own Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta.
First introduced in the 1999 play “I Can Do Bad All by Myself,” Madea has been featured in other theater productions, as well as dozens of films, TV shows, and even a book.
Following the 2019 film “A Madea Family Funeral,” Perry, then 49, talked about retiring the character, telling THR, “I don’t want to be her age playing her, so it was time to shut it down and move on. I’ve got some other things I want to do, and in this next 50, I’m going to do something different.”
Perry will write and direct “A Madea Homecoming,” as well as executive produce alongside his president of production and development, Michelle Sneed. Will Areu and Mark Swinton will also serve as producers.
In a 2012 interview with NPR, Perry discussed the origins of Madea’s character, and cited Eddie Murphy as an influence.
“Madea is a cross between my mother and my aunt and watching Eddie Murphy, the brilliant Eddie Murphy, do ‘The Klumps’. I thought — maybe I should try my hand at a female character. And that’s what came up. I thought I’d imitate the funniest person that I know, and she is the exactly the PG version of my mother and my aunt, and I loved having an opportunity to pay homage to them,” he said.
“She’s a strong, witty, loving, I mean really, just like my mother used to be before she died. She would beat the hell out of you but make sure the ambulance got there in time to make sure they could set your arm back, you know what I mean?” he continued.
“Because the love was there inside all of it. I know it sounds really strange, but that’s the old-school mentality. That’s why I think the character is so popular, because a lot of people miss that type of grandmother. Everybody is so worried about being politically correct that she’s no longer around.”
