NeNe Leakes Describes Final Moments with Husband Gregg Before His Passing

Nene Leakes reveals some of husband Gregg’s final words before he died of colon cancer on September 1.
In an emotional interview with People, the former star of “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” describes her final moments with Gregg, with whom she shared a 25-year relationship.
"The last five days before his passing was really beautiful. All of his children were there. His best friends were there. Our closest friends were there. We all sat with him around the clock,” she said, adding, “We talked a lot, and we made peace with what was happening.”
Among Gregg’s last words, NeNe revealed that he told her, "I'm not going to leave you. God is going to bless you."
"He said he wanted me to move on with my life,” she added.
When Gregg did make his “transition,” NeNe was by his side, holding his hand.
"He took a deep breath, and then he stopped," she said. "I thought I would be scared, but I just held him and kissed him."
NeNe first revealed Gregg’s stage III colon cancer diagnosis on Instagram in June 2018. The next year in May 2019, she said a PET scan showed that Gregg was cancer-free after completing chemotherapy.
Sadly, in June of this year, NeNe revealed that Gregg’s cancer had returned after two years in remission.
With regard to her role as his caretaker, NeNe admits, “It was difficult.”
"Gregg handled a lot of things in our life. There were some things I didn't know — some of the simple things. I didn't even know who the lawn guy was. I was having to ask him questions like that.”
In one instance, Gregg instructed NeNe to find a manila folder in his office, labeled, “Open this if anything ever happens to me.”
“When I opened it up, he had a letter to [their 22-year-old son] Brentt and telling us certain things like, where we needed to pay stuff and who was the accounting person to talk to because we didn't know anything. And I thought to myself when I looked through all the stuff that he had written and the things that he had left, that took a lot of strength."
With regard to their relationship — in which they married in 1997, divorced in 2011, and married again in 2013 — NeNe declares, “I wouldn't have chosen another husband other than him.”
“I said, 'I married you twice, crazy man.’”
Sadly, NeNe admits that she has yet to fully grasp her husband’s passing.
"I keep thinking to myself he's away on a trip and he'll be right back," she revealed. "I'm still waiting for him to come home."
Sending love and positive energy to the Leakes family during this time.
