Off-Duty NYPD Cop Accused of Shooting Lover and Killing Other Woman

An off-duty cop with the New York Police Department has been charged with murder after she was accused of killing a woman and wounding another earlier this week.
As reported by the Associated Press, on Thursday, Yvonne Wu (pictured above) — who had worked for the NYPD for over five years and was assigned to the 72nd District — was charged with the murder of 24-year-old Jamie Liang and the attempted murder of another woman in a double shooting in Brooklyn.
According to Assistant Chief Michael Kemper at a press conference on Wednesday, the incident occurred around 5 p.m. local time that same day.
When police arrived at the scene, authorities found Wu outside of the home. Authorities say she told responding officers that she shot someone inside the house.
After entering the residence, officials found Liang on the floor of the living room and another unidentified 23-year-old woman on the floor in a bedroom.
While Liang was shot in the chest "possibly more than once" and was later pronounced dead, the 23-year-old woman was shot once in the torso and is expected to survive.
Speaking to press, Kemper said the “horrific incident is being treated as a homicide case,” and that he believes the event was “domestic in nature.”
“We believe all three parties knew each other," adding that Wu and the 23-year-old who was shot in the torso "had an intimate relationship."
People Magazine has described Liang as “an acquaintance.”
Though the investigation is still in its early stages, authorities believe Wu was inside the home before the two other women returned. It is unclear if Wu was determined to be trespassing on the property.
Kemper added that police recovered a gun at the scene of the crime, and "there's a very good chance it is her service weapon."
Prior to being charged, Wu was evaluated at a local hospital. Kemper said Wu did not appear to have any disciplinary issues prior to the alleged shooting, and was "calm, collected and very forthcoming" at the time that police found her.

Citing a press release from the attorney general’s office, the AP adds that the shooting “may be the result of a personal or domestic dispute, without connection to Officer Wu’s law enforcement duties.”
A department spokesperson added that Wu has been suspended from the police department without pay.
The AP notes that the attorney general’s Office of Special Investigation is required by state law to investigate deaths at the hands of police officers, including when they are off duty.
It is unclear if Wu has retained an attorney.
On Thursday, loved ones of Liang set up a GoFundMe aimed at raising funds for her family and funeral expenses.
Organizer Elaine Zhao said Liang was a “dental student at NYU who had a bright future ahead of her.”
“She was loved by so many and filled every room with her kindness and lively spirit. We live to honor all the joy that she brought to the lives of her family and friends,” Zhao wrote.
As of this writing, the page has raised over $33K — surpassing its $30K goal.
Our condolences go out to the families of the victims during this difficult time.
