New Video Shows Woman’s Struggle with Security Before Jumping Off Cruise Ship

A chilling new video shows a female cruise passenger getting into a scuffle with Carnival Cruise security guards before she jumped off a balcony and into the Gulf of Mexico.
In the cell phone video shot on February 16, obtained by FOX 8 and reposted by TMZ, the Carnival Valor passenger — identified as a 32-year-old woman — is held by three security guards as she screams, “Alicia!” The guards then help the woman up a flight of stairs and off the pool deck.
Per TMZ, the woman was vacationing with her husband and was reportedly detained by security after getting into a fight with a man in a hot tub.
Though the video does not show it, a spokesperson for Carnival Cruise Line told outlets including WVUE that the guest jumped from her balcony. Additionally, despite passengers’ early statements, the representative said she was not in handcuffs.
Per WVUE, passengers say she jumped off the tenth floor and hit the side of the ship before hitting the water face first. Eyewitness say the woman disappeared soon after crews tossed life preservers and a flare marking her position.
In a photo obtained by FOX 8, an empty life preserver is seen in the water off the side of the ship.
Per the United States Coast Guard, the woman went overboard around 2:28 p.m. on Wednesday, approximately 150 miles offshore of Southwest Pass, Louisiana.
The ship — which left from Cozumel, Mexico around 3:27 p.m. on Tuesday, February 15 — returned to dock in New Orleans around 10:30 a.m. a day after the incident.
As reported by the Associated Press, the U.S. Coast Guard suspended its search for the woman on Thursday night after crews searched more than 2,514 square nautical miles.
“The decision to suspend a search-and-rescue case is never one we come to lightly,” said Chief Warrant Officer Tricia Eldredge, command duty officer at Sector New Orleans. “We offer our deepest sympathies to the family during this difficult time.”
We also offer our condolences to the woman’s loved ones during this difficult time.
