On Wednesday, Billboard broke the news that BET is set to air a five-part docuseries on Murder Inc. Records, founded in the late ’90s by brothers Chris and Irv Gotti.
Executive produced by Irv and Ja Rule, who was signed to the label in the 2000s, the series will drop this summer, and will feature exclusive archival footage detailing the company’s rise and fall.
“I got to start my record label with Ja Rule by my side,” Irv said in a statement. “My life was filled with great lows, but I’m not ashamed of those lows. It all helped make me the person I am today. With this documentary series, I plan to tell the truth and nothing but the truth.”
“Pain is love,” Ja Rule said in his own statement, referencing his 2001 album on the label. “We endured the pain so others could feel the love.”
After helping with acts such as DMX and Jay-Z, mogul Russell Simmons gave Irv his own label under Def Jam.
In 1999, Murder Inc. released its first album, “Venni Vetti Vecci” by Ja Rule and subsequently signed and launched the careers of artists including Ashanti, Vita, and Lloyd.
Following a series of financial setbacks, Irv relaunched the label in 2017 with Kevin Liles and 300 Entertainment.
In a statement from Tiffany Lea Williams, executive vice president of BET Unscripted Programming, “Music is in our DNA. We thank our longstanding partner Irv Gotti, and the many talented artists at the iconic label for trusting our brand to tell their personal and inspiring stories.”
“We look forward to bringing viewers a compelling music documentary series that reveals how this label consequently changed the music industry forever,” Williams added.
Wednesday on Instagram, Irv confirmed the docuseries, declaring to his followers, “It’s Dope y’all. All my Murderers. Y’all gonna love this. A lot of big announcements coming. Stay Tuned.”

On Thursday, Irv posted a picture of him and his colleagues, including Ja Rule and Vita, and promised that his artists are going to “tell [their] truths for the documentary.”
“I hope y’all are ready for what all of them had to say,” he wrote. “The people who worked in the studio. Who worked for me in the office. The documentary. You will get the whole story. And I told everyone. Speak the truth. About everything. That I’m only doing 1 documentary. So I want it to be accurate on everything that happened. From the beginning til right now. I think y’all are gonna love it. Lol.”
