Maine School Bus Driver Dies in Medical Event After Students Steer Bus to Safety

A 77-year-old school bus driver in Maine has passed away after experiencing a medical emergency behind the wheel — prompting the students on the vehicle to leap into action.
Per a press release from the Topsham Police Department, on Monday at around 7:30 a.m. on Route 201, a driver — later identified as Arthur McDougall — experienced a medical event that left him incapacitated while he was driving a bus with 14 middle and high school students.
Authorities say at least two students took notice and steered the bus to the side of the road while applying brakes.
After the vehicle came to a stop, a third student attempted to apply first aid, while another student called 9-1-1. Others exited the bus and waved down passing traffic.
Eventually, police responded to the scene and administered CPR while using an automated external defibrillator on Arthur.
After fire personnel arrived, Arthur was first transported to Mid Coast Hospital, and then Life Flighted to Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Sadly, in a message posted to Facebook on Monday, Maine School Administrative District 75 interim Superintendent Bob Lucy revealed Arthur’s passing.
“It is with great sadness that I write to inform you that Arthur McDougall, our bus driver who was transported to the hospital this morning, has passed away,” Lucy said.
“We offer our deepest condolences to Arthur’s family, friends, and colleagues. This is very difficult news to share and process,” Lucy continued. “We will have counselors available to support all students and staff in our schools and District buildings tomorrow and in the upcoming days.”
Topsham Police released another statement on Tuesday, relaying a message from McDougall’s wife Diane.
“Diane McDougall asked that we pass along her thanks to all of the students, citizens, and first responders who attempted to save her husband’s life yesterday. She stated it was overwhelming to hear of the efforts taken by those involved,” they wrote.
Per a tribute posted to Arthur’s sister Jo’s Facebook on Tuesday, Arthur is also survived by his three children: Arthur, Matthew, and Pamela.
Additionally, Jo revealed Arthur served in the U.S. Air Force for four years and worked for Bath Iron Works for 36 years before retiring in 2007.
Our condolences go out to Arthur’s family and loved ones for their loss.
