Chris Rock declined to file a police report after Will Smith slapped him onstage at the 2022 Academy Awards for making a joke about wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s hair loss.
Hours after the headline-making smack, the Los Angeles Police Department released a statement, saying, “The individual involved has declined to file a police report.”
"LAPD investigative entities are aware of an incident between two individuals during the Academy Awards program," police said. "The incident involved one individual slapping another. The individual involved has declined to file a police report. If the involved party desires a police report at a later date, LAPD will be available to complete an investigative report.”
During Sunday’s Oscars, Chris joked, “Jada, I love ya. ‘G.I. Jane 2,’ can't wait to see ya," referencing the 1997 movie in which actress Demi Moore appears with a shaved head. (Jada has been open about her hair loss, revealing that it’s due to the autoimmune disorder alopecia, which impacts the hair follicles, resulting in both bald spots and hair loss.)
Will then walked onstage, smacked Rock in the face, walked back to his seat, and yelled, "Keep my wife's name out your ------- mouth!"
"Wow, dude, it was a ‘G.I. Jane’ joke," Chris said, to which Will replied once again, "Keep my wife's name out your ------- mouth!"
"I'm going to, okay?" Chris replied, before saying, "That was the... greatest night in the history of television.”
Minutes later, when Will won the Best Actor Oscar for his role in “King Richard,” he apologized to the Academy, but not to Chris.
"I want to apologize to the Academy. I want to apologize to all my fellow nominees," he said.
Following the incident, the Academy released a statement condemning Will’s actions, saying, "The Academy does not condone violence of any form. Tonight we are delighted to celebrate our 94th Academy Awards winners, who deserve this moment of recognition from their peers and movie lovers around the world."
On Monday, the Academy also said it has "officially started a formal review around the incident and will explore further action and consequences in accordance with our Bylaws, Standards of Conduct and California law.”"
That same day, a source told People that Chris and Will have reportedly had tension ever since Chris joked about Jada while hosting the 2016 Academy Awards.
"When Chris hosted the Oscars in 2016, Jada was boycotting because of 'Oscars So White.' In his monologue, he made fun of her, saying she can't boycott something she wasn't invited to," the insider said. "Will was still mad about that."
At the 2016 awards, Chris said in his opening monologue, “Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna's panties. I wasn't invited.”
Despite the drama, Chris and Will have reportedly reconciled — according to Diddy.
While speaking to Page Six after the Oscars, Diddy told the outlet, “That’s not a problem. That’s over. I can confirm that. It’s all love. They’re brothers.”
Additionally, at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party, Variety‘s senior culture and events editor Marc Malkin asked Will how he was doing. In response, Will reportedly replied, “It’s all love.”
