NV High School Basketball Star Shot Multiple Times at House Party

A Nevada high school basketball star, who has committed to attend and play at the University of Southern California in August, was allegedly shot multiple times at a house party over the weekend.
As reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal, North Las Vegas police said gunfire erupted about 11:15 p.m. on Saturday night in the 4900 block of Support Street, near Lone Mountain Road and Simmons Street.
Per authorities, four people, including two minors, suffered gunshot wounds after a quarrel broke out inside the house.
High school senior Aaliyah Gayles, a student and basketball player at Spring Valley High School, was one of the four people shot.
Per Fox 5, Aaliyah’s father told the outlet through Facebook that his daughter was shot 10 times. Her father added that she underwent two surgeries on Sunday and is in stable condition and doing well.
Per TMZ, Aaliyah’s father also wrote via social media, “I know there is some that will say it’s my fault and I take full responsibility for it but please please keep my baby girl in your prayers Las Vegas.”
He reportedly added, “I will give everyone that support. Aaliyah… she’s ok. She [will] make it like always. Thank you all. [Aaliyah is a] true warrior.”
Police added that the four victims were hospitalized with survivable gunshot wounds, and one woman was listed in “serious” condition after she suffered multiple gunshot wounds to her lower body.
As of Sunday afternoon, police say the alleged shooter has not been arrested and that an investigation is ongoing.
Per TMZ, Aaliyah, a 5-foot-9-inch point guard, averaged 13.8 points, 4.9 rebounds, 3.5 steals and 3.3 assists per game this past season.
ESPN adds that she is a five-star recruit and is ranked number 8 in the nation.
In a statement to ESPN, USC head coach Lindsay Gottlieb told the outlet, “Aaliyah is one of the strongest, most resilient young people I have ever known. I have no doubt she will continue to face this unfathomable situation with courage and resolve. We will continue to support her and her parents in every way that we possibly can.”
Over the weekend, Sally Blair, the mother of former Spring Valley captain Garrisen Freeman, was given permission by the Gayles family to set up a GoFundMe aimed at raising funds for Aaliyah’s medical bills.
“The family is overwhelmed with gratitude for the amount of support this community has shown. The journey to recovery won’t be easy, but this star always finds a way to persevere and will continue to do so. Please consider a donation to support Aaliyah and the Gayles family. The family has approved this account. If you cannot donate, please continue to pray for Aaliyah,” Sally wrote.
As of this writing, the page has raised over $7,000 out of its $10,000 goal.
Sending love and healing energy to Aaliyah and the other victims of this senseless tragedy.
