1 Dead, 5 Others Injured After Mississippi Music Festival Shooting

At least one person has died and at least five have been injured after alleged shootings broke out at the Mississippi Mudbug Festival over the weekend.
Saturday on Facebook, Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones announced that multiple alleged shooters opened fire at the festival in Jackson.
In an update, Jones wrote, “One person is confirmed deceased on scene. Several shooters believed to be involved and the investigation is being conducted as an active shooter situation.”
In another update, Jones wrote, “Other victims appear to be stable at this time and don’t appear to be directly involved in the shooting or circumstances that led to the shooting,” noting that “the investigation is ongoing.”
Per ABC News, authorities believe the individual who died is one of the suspected shooters.
As reported by CNN, Jones said the deceased person is believed to have been shot by an officer after “there was an exchange of gunfire between at least two to three individuals in and around a vehicle.”
“We believe one of the law enforcement personnel discharged his weapon, and we believe at this particular time that the victim that is deceased is possibly due to the officer-involved shooting,” Jones continued, though he would not reveal the name of the law enforcement officer involved.
Per his Facebook statement, Jones wrote that at least two people were detained for questioning.
CNN reports that authorities have since located a vehicle, two rifles, and at least one pistol they believe are tied to the shooting.
“At this time, we do not know what the motive is or exactly what happened,” Jones was quoted as saying via CNN. “We will find out exactly what happened. We will find out who’s all involved, and they should be held accountable and responsible for this very reckless incident.”
The Mississippi Mudbug Festival — which featured amusement rides and performances from artists such as Blue Oyster Cult — began on Wednesday and was originally scheduled to run through Sunday. However, the event was eventually canceled.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims of this senseless tragedy.
