Bobby Brown Believes Whitney Houston Would Still Be Alive If They Had Stayed Together

Bobby Brown is opening up about his tumultuous marriage with late ex-wife Whitney Houston.
In a revealing new interview with People ahead of his A&E docuseries “Biography: Bobby Brown,” the former New Edition group member speaks about his relationship with Whitney, which ended in 2007.
As documented in the special, though he and Whitney battled addiction issues, Bobby says he was able to kick his habits years before their split.
“It was really rough because I was so addicted. I had to be put into medical detox first,” he said about being sober before he was incarcerated in 2000. “And then the Bible got me through. It was about becoming healthier for my daughter [Bobbi Kristina] and for the rest of my kids.”
However, in the documentary, Bobby alleges Whitney did not quit drugs, which caused great conflict in their marriage.
Though he says he did not want to divorce, he claims Whitney was influenced by her family and team to end their relationship.
“I think we could have helped each other out,” he says in the documentary. “I think she’d still be here if we hadn’t divorced.”
While reflecting on his ex-wife’s 2012 death — in which she was found unresponsive in a Beverly Hills hotel bathtub after allegedly taking a mix of drugs — Bobby said he was surprised because, “I thought she was getting herself together.”
“I didn’t think she would turn back,” he told People.
Sadly, drug addiction would continue to plague the Brown family in years to come.
On January 31, 2015, Bobby and Whitney’s daughter Bobbi Kristina was found unresponsive in a bathtub at her Alpharetta, Georgia, home — similar to the manner in which Whitney was found.
Bobbi ultimately died in hospice care on July 26, 2015.
On November 18, 2020, Bobby Jr. — whom Bobby shared with ex Kim Ward — suffered an overdose of alcohol, cocaine, and fentanyl, and was found dead inside his Los Angeles apartment.
Though Bobby has struggled with alcohol addiction through the years, he received help at a treatment facility in 2020.
“I work hard at staying sober every day of my life,” he told People, “and it’s going to be that way for the rest of my life and I know that.”
