‘The Real’ Is Giving You the 411 on Uterine Fibroids!

Real Fam, women of color suffering from uterine fibroids deserve better health care!

That’s why “The Real” is teaming up with Hologic to highlight the disparities in our health care system, particularly when it comes to the issue of uterine fibroids, which are noncancerous growths in the uterus.

While 8 in 10 Black women will develop uterine fibroids at some point in their life, many Black women will wait years before seeking treatment, in part due to physicians who may lack cultural competence.

Those who do seek care may also only be offered more invasive procedures, such as a hysterectomy.

To ensure that Black women get the care they deserve, medical professionals need to designate periods as a vital health sign, health care providers need to connect Black women with culturally competent care, and we need to support legislation — such as the Stephanie Tubbs Jones Uterine Fibroid Research and Education Act of 2021 — to amplify uterine fibroid research and awareness.
